WeatherWorks Certified Snowfall Totals (CST™) reports are produced on our proprietary website following each accumulation of snow and/or ice resulting from naturally falling winter precipitation (snow, sleet or freezing rain). A CST™ report is generated for a specific client requested city or town at the location level and published approximately 48 hours after the conclusion of the storm’s precipitation within that location’s state or region. A designated person at your company will be notified via email whenever a storm that has affected your area is posted. Please do not contact us to inquire when data will be posted if 48 hours have not elapsed since the end of the precipitation event. The report includes a narrative summary of the specific event (start and end times of precipitation as well as a general description of the type, intensity and duration of precipitation and any unusual adverse effects). Reports are not typically prepared for ground accumulations of ice that result in run-off, snow-melt water refreezing or snow that is caused to drift and settle into an area. These type of events may be referred to as part of a custom report and is discussed in more detail in the “special client report” section below.
Sunday, November 30, 2025 Any exchange or “swap” of locations after this date will be assessed a charge equivalent to adding a location at our standard or premium rates.
CST™ Service Description and Guidelines
WeatherWorks provides an unbiased, impartial analysis of snow and ice totals to over a thousand clients across the United States. We always strive to maintain the highest level of professionalism in the industry. Our clientele includes both public and private entities consisting of municipal and county highway departments, commercial and private contractors, property management companies, homeowner associations, commercial properties, and large corporate facilities. Our company has been successfully providing these services since 1986 as an objective third-party source for both contractors and property owners to evaluate, substantiate, and document winter invoices.
The general practice to measuring snowfall is as follows: Snowfall measurements should be taken on a snowboard (i.e., a small piece of plywood painted white) placed on the ground in an open area not subject to drifting. If no snowboard is available, a wooden deck is an acceptable alternative. Measurements are taken using a standard ruler and can be performed as frequently as every six (6) hours (clearing the snowboard after each measurement). The storm-total snowfall is the sum of all measurements taken during the storm, rounded to the nearest one-tenth of an inch. If snow has blown on to or off of the snowboard, several measurements should be taken from around the area where snow has not drifted, then averaged together. If the falling snow continually melts on the snow board and never reaches a depth of 0.1 inch, a trace of snow should be reported. It is important to obtain accumulations as soon as possible following a storm’s conclusion due to the fact that newly fallen snow can quickly become subject to compaction, settling, sublimation, or melting.
The first step in preparing a Certified Snowfall Totals™ report is to determine where and when precipitation fell. WeatherWorks’ meteorologists use hourly observations from government-operated surface observing stations, Doppler radar imagery, a network of over one thousand traffic cams, and conversations with road department personnel (among other tools) to achieve this task. Then, storm-total snowfall data is collected from a variety of sources including National Weather Service Storm Spotters and Cooperative Observers, road and highway departments, colleges and universities, private weather observers, as well as our own staff meteorologists and interns. The snowfall data is analyzed for spatial and temporal consistency using both objective tools (e.g., contouring algorithm) and subjective measures (e.g., knowledge of the topography of the region), ensuring no errant or biased observations are included in the analysis. Finally, the quality-controlled snow accumulation dataset is used to generate snowfall totals at a zip-code level. Due to the geographic size of some locations, there may be substantial sub-location variations in the snowfall field. In this instance a compromise or average amount is used to represent the location.
While measuring and analyzing snowfall is not an easy task, WeatherWorks does guarantee that the amounts issued in our Certified Snowfall Totals™ reports are the best source of unbiased snowfall measurements and the totals are derived using sound meteorological and scientific principles.
WeatherWorks will consider preparing special client reports on an individual basis at our billable client rate of $75.00 per hour. This request can be made by the client to further clarify an event that has already been published or to generate an additional report for an event that was not published, i.e. refreeze of runoff water, heavy drifting snow, or to split a long duration event that was published into two separate storms. In the event that a request for a special client report is made by the client and honored by WeatherWorks, payment to WeatherWorks will be made in the amount of $75.00 per hour and charged to the credit card on file or paid by check in advance.
WeatherWorks grants you limited license to access and make personal use of this website to assist in the preparation of snow and ice management and winter related services. The data is intended to assist in the preparation of snow and ice invoices, snow and ice management, preparing job estimates, researching past storms and preparing climate summaries for both the property owner and snow and ice contractor.
Client understands that both new and inactive locations (designated with a red identifier) added to your account will contain no or very limited prior data. In addition, if a storm is in progress, you may not receive any storm data until the next winter event.
Our staff reserves the right to review and reject any locations deemed geographically incorrect that are requested by your company. You will not be charged for any locations that are rejected by our administrative staff.
